Unleashing Creativity: Colm Dillane's Journey to KidSuper
In a captivating evening at Rizzoli, a packed audience gathered for an insightful exploration of creativity and curiosity, with a focus on the remarkable journey of Colm Dillane, founder and designer of KidSuper. What was initially planned as a conversation between Dillane and an arts writer transformed into a solo performance, as the designer took center stage, captivating the crowd with anecdotes and excerpts from his recently released book, "The Misadventures of KidSuper."
This illustrated autobiography traces Dillane's path from selling T-shirts in high school to becoming a prominent fashion designer showcasing his collections in New York and Paris. The crowd, far from being deterred by Dillane's solo act, embraced his colorful stories, laced with expletives, about his career journey.
"I've learned through trial and error," Dillane shared, adding, "My path was shaped by what worked and what didn't." Dillane's unique background, including frequent moves as a child, led him to create T-shirts and build a creative community in high school. "Clothing became the catalyst for my obsession with fashion," he explained.
After high school, Dillane's gap year in Brazil playing soccer taught him a valuable lesson about motivation and perspective. "My plan B was their plan A," he realized, referring to the Brazilian players' aspirations. This insight fueled his determination upon returning to New York.
Dillane's academic pursuit of mathematics at NYU didn't deter him from developing KidSuper. In fact, his math degree has proven invaluable for the business side of his fashion venture. "It's a secret weapon," he joked, explaining how his academic background surprises and wins over potential brand partners.
After graduating, Dillane dedicated himself full-time to KidSuper, and in 2019, he embarked on the ambitious goal of hosting a fashion show in Paris. Despite initial challenges, including finding an affordable venue and creating 30 looks, the show was a success, with a Vogue editor declaring KidSuper "the breakout surprise" of Men's Paris Fashion Week. However, this recognition didn't immediately translate into widespread fame.
"My life changed zero," Dillane admitted. But he didn't let this deter him. Through perseverance and continued efforts, KidSuper has become a regular fixture at Paris Fashion Week, and Dillane has collaborated with renowned brands like Puma, Tommy Hilfiger, Mattel, and Bape, even serving as a guest designer for Louis Vuitton menswear.
In a heartfelt message to his fans at Rizzoli, Dillane emphasized the importance of resilience and determination. "Keep going, keep your head down, and never quit," he advised. His story serves as an inspiration for anyone facing challenges in their creative pursuits.
And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the destination, it's about the journey and the lessons learned along the way. So, what do you think? Is Dillane's story a testament to the power of perseverance, or is there more to this narrative? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
